A beautiful little bay located between Mauna Lani Resort and Hāpuna Beach State Recreation Area, Puakō is a classic Hawaiʻi beach community. Tiny old homes with yards full of mangoes are right next to brand-new mansions, and there are beach access points all along the road. Puakō is widely known as a great snorkeling destination, and excellent for fishing as well. Choose one of our great Puakō rentals, and you’ll be enjoying the ocean morning, noon, and night! Here on Hawaiʻi Island, the term “beach access” does not always denote sand, and this is the case for most of Puakō, so be prepared to walk on rocks. At the northern end of the bay, Hāpuna Beach and Waialea Bay are more like the sandy beaches you were hoping for, and it’s a very pleasant few miles’ ride by bicycle to those beaches. There are several rental companies in and near Puakō which rent not only bicycles, but also kayaks, surfboards, and stand-up paddleboards. Some of these companies will deliver right to you at your rental!

Puakō is a unique area, in that it almost never rains, but there’s a lot of groundwater that comes down from the saddle between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. You’ll notice that many of the yards here have ponds for this reason; also, as you swim in the ocean, you may notice pockets of colder fresh water from time to time. Puakō is renowned for snorkeling.

There’s only one store here, the Puakō General Store. It’s actually an excellent little store, considering its size, and you can pick up some good prepared food and snacks here. However, for serious grocery shopping, it’s best to go to Waimea or Waikoloa. There are no restaurants in Puakō; the nearest are in Kawaihae a few miles away, or at Mauna Lani resort.
