ʻAkaka Falls

12 miles north of Hilo, along the beautiful Hāmākua Coast, lies the majestic ʻAkaka Falls. Plunging 442 feet, it’s the tallest easily-viewed falls on the island. The falls overlook is reached via a short (less than half a mile round-trip) paved trail in ʻAkaka Falls State Park. The park is open daily from 8:30 to 6. ʻAkaka Falls is part of Kolekole Stream; there is a beach park three miles downstream where Kolekole Stream flows into the ocean. This part of the island is peaceful and quiet; if you choose one of our great rentals around here, you’ll be assured of a restful vacation!

The nearest town to ʻAkaka Falls is Honomū, a few miles away. It’s little more than a village, so expect a few interesting antique and knickknack shops here, but no groceries or services. You can get a bite to eat, however, at Hilo Shark’s Coffee (locally grown) or Mr. Ed’s Bakery.

The drive to Hilo is so beautiful, you won’t mind heading into town for your necessities. Stroll along Hilo’s scenic Bayfront area, exploring all sorts of shops; check out some of Hilo’s unique museums (Astronomy? Tsunamis?); rent a bicycle and ride through the parks of Bayfront and Banyan Drive. Hilo boasts an amazing farmers’ market on Wednesdays and Saturdays; it’s much smaller, though still available, the rest of the week. Try some new fruits you’ve never seen before! Hilo also has all the basics, like Wal-Mart, Target, and a mall with movie theatres. For a unique experience, try a show at the historic Palace Theatre downtown.

ʻAkaka Falls and ʻAkaka Falls State Park is a great spot for a peaceful and relaxing vacation!
