Staying on the sunny south shore in one of our Maui Hawaii house rentals will put you right among some of the island’s top beaches. The beaches found in Kihei, Wailea and Makena are among the best in the world, and there are miles of sand here to explore. Swimming, snorkeling, and boating in the warm waters of south Maui are bound to expose visitors to an abundance of tropical marine life found in the area. To learn more about the sea life you’ll see in Maui’s sea and shoreline, head to the Maui Ocean Center located in Wailuku.
Children will love exploring the tide pools exhibit at Maui Ocean Center, where they can examine creatures up close and even touch some sea life such as starfish. The open ocean exhibit allows visitors to observe a variety of sharks, stingrays, and tropical fish from an underwater tunnel made of glass, giving you the feel of being underwater with these magnificent creatures! Certified scuba divers can even join the aquarium staff in the water. Viewing honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles) and a variety of special exhibits that invite you to delve deeper into the Hawaiian culture make a visit to the Maui Ocean Center both entertaining and informative. Browse their website for ticket information and for up-to-date information on current special exhibits.
Once you’ve learned all about the amazing marine life found on and around Maui, you’ll be ready to hit the beach to spot some in their natural habitat. The Kama’ole Beach Parks are a string of three top notch beaches found in Kihei, and are known as Kam I, Kam II, and Kam III. All of these beaches offer rocky areas that are ideal for snorkeling, although the north end of Kam I is said to be the best.
