As you move further away from Kailua-Kona, the vastness and rawness of nature present on the Big Island becomes more apparent. South of town, Kealakekua Bay is a site of both history and vibrant marine life. Visit the site where Captain James Cook first set foot on the island in 1778 and the first extensive contact between Hawaiians and Westerners took place. He was later killed at this same site. In contrast to these solemn remembrances, the bay is also home to some of the island’ very best snorkeling. This marine life conservation district boasts an abundance of fish species which are all protected from being fished. Snorkel on your own or join one of the tour companies that lead a limited number of excursions into this precious region. As an added bonus, a pod of spinner dolphins can often be seen in the deeper areas of the bay.
When you think of the town of Kona, many people would recognize it from the popular Kona Coffee. Much of this famed coffee is grown from the Kona area extending down to the southern end of the island. This breezy area along the base of the slopes of Haleakala offer a great getaway, especially for coffee lovers. Dotting the roadside you will find places of interest such as the Kona Coffee Living History Farm, which will take you back to the coffee plantation era of the 1920s, as well as a host of coffee farms where you can sample and discover why this area is so well known for its excellent cups of joe.
