Hilo

On the verdant windward slopes of Mauna Loa, the world’s most massive mountain, is the small city of Hilo. It’s the biggest town on Hawaiʻi Island, and arguably the most interesting. If you like waterfalls, jungles, the occasional downpour, and an eclectic community, you’ll absolutely love your vacation and vacation rentals in Hilo. Choose one of our great vacation rentals in Hilo, and visit the green side of Hawaiʻi Island!

Most of Hawaiʻi Island’s resorts are on the dry side, since it’s got perpetual sun and sandy beaches. But what Hilo lacks in those, it makes up for in so many other ways. If you want to spend extra time at Volcanoes National Park, then Hilo is a great home base. If you’re looking for locally produced items to take home, Hilo is an excellent choice. Shoppers (and people-watchers) will enjoy strolling along the blocks of beautiful Bayfront. Museum and history enthusiasts have several unique small museums to choose from, including ʻImiloa Astronomy Center, Lyman Museum, Pacific Tsunami Museum, and Mokupāpapa Discovery Center. Hilo also has several waterfalls to visit, a large farmers’ market, great parks, a zoo, and a nice bike path stretching along the Bayfront area. And of course, the airport is here if you want to hop on a helicopter tour before heading back to your lovely vacation rental in Hilo!

While not exactly sandy, Hilo’s beach parks are popular spots to fish or get in the water. Check out Coconut Island (Moku Ola) on Banyan Drive, a nice place to picnic and get an incredible view of Hilo Bay. Keaukaha, the coastal area past the harbor, is dotted with small beach parks that really fill up on the weekends. Water in this area tends to be extra cold, as the coast here is lined with freshwater springs that seep into the ocean. It’s definitely a unique swimming experience!

With so much to do, you’re sure to love your great vacation rental in Hilo!
