Honalo

Just a few miles south of Kailua-Kona, Honalo is a residential area near historic Keauhou. Choose one of our great rentals in Honalo Hawaii, and you’ll love exploring the Kona Coast!

Honalo is just outside of Kona town, so you’ll be close to great shopping, whether it be for souvenirs or necessities. It’s also close to Keauhou Bay, which is an awesome spot for water sports. Try kayaking, outrigger canoe paddling, stand-up paddling, surfing, or boogie boarding, or just snorkel around looking at fish and coral. Keauhou Pier is also the spot to hop on snorkel trips to Kealakekua Bay, or a kayak snorkel and sea cave tour.

Plenty of Exciting Activities to Enjoy

Honalo is just minutes down the road from Kahaluʻu Beach, a popular snorkeling location. The fish that call the waters of Kahaluʻu home are amazingly tame and are not scared easily by snorkelers. This means that you can enjoy a snorkeling experience surrounded by tropical fish, reveling in up close looks at these vibrant creatures. A partially submerged rock wall helps protect the cove from larger waves, resulting in tranquil waters ideal for beginning snorkelers. Explore alongside tropical fish such as butterflyfish, parrotfish, and green sea turtles. Kahaluʻu Beach also has a popular surfing school for beginners to the sport. Stop in Kahaluʻu Bay Surf & Sea for surf board, stand up paddle board, kayak, boogie board, or snorkel gear rentals, or set up a lesson with one of the pros on staff. Experienced instructors will have you balancing on a stand-up paddle board or catching your first wave on a surf board in no time. Taking a lesson early on during your stay ensures that you can spend the rest of your vacation riding waves in confidence and relishing in a new sport learned.

Head down to Aliʻi Drive in Kailua-Kona for a fun stroll through souvenir shops and historical sites. Visit the gallery-like lobby of the King Kamehameha Hotel, the royal treasures at Huliheʻe Palace, and Mokuʻaikaua Church, the oldest Christian church in Hawaiʻi. Hop in for a swim at the Kailua Pier, the starting point of the world-famous Ironman Triathlon. Take a romantic dinner cruise from the pier, or get real adventurous with a parasail expedition!

Discover Local Goods

Honalo is situated right in the Big Island’s coffee country. Support local growers and pick up locally grown and processed coffee beans to enjoy a freshly brewed cup on your breezy lanai each morning. The Kona Gold Trading Company is nearby and offers their world-famous rum cakes, perfect to pair with your cup of joe. Treats such as lilikoi rum cakes and pineapple rum cakes are made with locally produced rum.

Head south into Kona’s uplands, and you’ll pass through fragrant coffee fields. There are many working coffee farms to visit, though perhaps the most interesting is the Kona Historical Society’s Living History Farm, where costumed interpreters demonstrate the farm tasks of yesteryear. There are also many art galleries in south Kona, particularly in the town of Holualoa. With nearly a dozen art galleries lining a short section of Mamalahoa Highway, this is a great place to explore the works of local artists and perhaps pick up an island-inspired piece to bring home.

Honalo offers the tranquility of being outside the downtown Kona area, while still offering close proximity to sights, beaches, restaurants, and shops. Stay in Honalo and enjoy your visit to the Kona Coast!
