The resort property is on land formerly inhabited by sizeable settlements of ancient Hawaiians, and cultural advisors in residence do their best to safeguard sensitive sites, as well as educate visitors about the culture. Mauna Lani is probably the best place to view still-functioning traditional Hawaiian fishponds, as well as petroglyphs carved into the lava rock long ago. Once a month, when the full moon rises, the resort hosts “Talk Story at Kalahuipuaʻa,” a storytelling gathering at the Eva Parker Woods Cottage by the fishponds. Attendees have a chance to share stories, island style, and enjoy music under the full moon. It’s an experience not to be missed!
