Wood Valley

Wood Valley, Hawaii Vacation Rentals

Tucked away in a peaceful niche in the rolling hills of Kaʻū district is the community of Wood Valley. This area is best known for the Tibetan Buddhist Temple here, and visitors are welcome to join daily meditation sessions there. Wood Valley is a little off the main highway, and is about as far as you can get on the island from Hilo or Kona. If you like to travel off the beaten path and are looking for a serene, meditative vacation, our Hawaii vacation rentals here are a perfect choice for your Kaʻū getaway.

The full name of Wood Valley’s temple is Nechung Dorje Drayang Ling, “Immutable Island of Melodious Sound.” It’s a Buddhist temple in the Tibetan tradition which was established in 1973. His Holiness the Dalai Lama has visited and taught here, as well as many other illustrious lamas. Regular retreats are held here, and groups can book the facilities for their own workshops and retreats as well. They operate a small temple store as well, selling prayer flags, books, incense, Tibetan singing bowls, and jewelry.

In the nearby town of Pāhala, you’ll find all the small-town basic amenities like groceries, a few restaurants, library, and emergency services. Coffee lovers will also enjoy a stop at the Kaʻū Coffee Mill: yes, Kaʻū grows lots of coffee, and they’ll tell you it’s as good as Kona’s. You be the judge!

There are many amazing coastline places to visit in the area, though not all are swimmable. Don’t miss the famous Punaluʻu black sand beach, to view the resting sea turtles. The other must-see is the breathtaking cliffs of Ka Lae, at the southernmost tip of the island.

Wood Valley is the perfect place to take a deep breath, and enjoy life!
