Big Island Fitness & Gyms

You’ll notice that many residents here on Hawaiʻi Island love to stay active outdoors. But if you’re not up for joining the Ironman triathletes as they ride down the highway, perhaps you’d still like to keep up your regular workouts while on vacation here. Choose from standard weightlifting workouts, CrossFit, yoga, Pilates, mixed martial arts, and more!

Kailua-Kona

Kona has lots of Big Island gyms to choose from; as the home of the Ironman Triathlon, residents here need to stay fit! Some great gym choices include Pacific Island Fitness and Fitness Forever Training Center. CrossFit is also popular, with several locations in Kailua-Kona. Those seeking a great yoga class should check out Yoganics in Kainaliu, which also offers lovely eco-conscious yoga attire, or Big Island Yoga co-op in Kealakekua. Big Island gyms and spas are also available at the hotels in Waikoloa Beach Resort.

Hilo

We’ve got CrossFit, we’ve got yoga… but the workout that reigns supreme on the island’s east side is mixed martial arts. That’s due to the influence of hometown UFC champion BJ Penn, whose Penn Training and Fitness Center is highly popular. And it’s not only for those looking to try out jiu-jitsu; they also offer a variety of workout classes, from kettlebells to Zumba. Fitness for the whole family!

Puna

Yoga reigns supreme here, the workout of choice for Puna’s eclectic hippie set. The mecca is definitely Kalani Retreat Center, on the coastal Kapoho-Kalapana “Red Road.” Sign up for an intensive yoga retreat, or join the Hawaiʻi Yoga Festival in October.

Waimea

For those needing a workout in North Hawaiʻi, there are a surprising number of choices in such a small town. There’s No Place Like Om offers great yoga classes, as does historic Anna Ranch. CrossFit is always popular, and Five Mountain Fitness has a nice array of classes for children and adults.

Finally, don’t forget to get in some outdoor workouts! Rent a bicycle, paddleboard, kayak, or snorkel gear, and make sure you get a little exercise while you enjoy having fun in the sun. Ocean Sports, located at ʻAnaehoʻomalu (A-Bay), is ready to rent your choice of beach gear, including stand-up paddle boards, hydro bikes, and boogie boards. Bike Works at Queens’ Shops Waikoloa is an awesome spot to rent a bicycle for the day.
