Big Island, Hawai’i Golf Courses

The Hawaiian Islands are famed for world-class golfing, and the Big Island is no exception to the rule. Golf on the Big Island offers spectacular scenery and courses like nowhere else on earth. Home to a number of challenging, pro-designed courses, you don’t have to be a pro golfer to drive the ball on The Orchid Isle; the Big Island golf scene offers an excellent, reasonably priced municipal course too.

The Top Big Island, Hawai’i Golf Courses

All of the top Big Island golf courses are located on the Kōhala Coast. The Mauna Kea Golf Course is a Robert Trent Jones, Sr. course that’s hailed as the world’s most beautiful course. With beastly slopes and a daunting par-3 third that stretches as long as 272 yards over a section of the Pacific, this “Beauty and the Beast” course is a must-play. The South Course at Mauna Lani Resort is consistently punctuated by the world’s largest water trap – the Pacific Ocean. The par-3 fifteenth experience is in and of itself reason enough to play this course. The Perry Dye-designed Big Island Country Club is located at 2,000 feet in elevation, and is the only course on the island that has bentgrass greens. Nine holes of this magnificent multi-elevation course have water features, with a par-3 island hole on the 17th.

Big Island Municipal Golf Courses

Not to be outdone by the big guys, the historic Hilo Municipal Golf Course is a well-kept challenging course and the only muni course on the Big Island. Built in 1951 and newly renovated, this 18-hole course is a bit of an oddity – it has no sand traps due to Hilo’s frequent rainy weather. For under $50 including a cart on weekdays (non-resident fees), Hilo Muni is one of the best Big Island golf values on the island.
