Ka Lae Vacation Homes

Ka Lae, also known as South Point, is the southernmost tip of the United States. It’s also thought to be the first landing place of Polynesian voyagers who arrived here over a thousand years ago. A unique and stunning landscape, Ka Lae is a windswept plateau that juts out into the open ocean. Steep cliffs drop down to the deep blue sea; it’s known as one of the best fishing places on the island. Choose one of our great rentals here at Ka Lae, and enjoy unparalleled peace and windswept beauty. Find out more about the vacation rentals in Big Island Hawaii below:

It’s a 12-mile drive to the end of the road once you turn off the highway. This wild place is isolated and has no services, so make sure you bring plenty of water, sun protection, and adequate footwear if you plan to hike around and explore. Near the point, you’ll be able to see the evidence of early human habitation; ancient fishermen bored holes in the rocks to tie lines and anchor boats here. You’ll probably see brave locals jumping off the cliffs, then climbing back up long rusty ladders; it’s not for the faint of heart, and not recommended for visitors.

Ka Lae’s terrain is a maze of dirt tracks and 4-wheel drive paths. If you want to visit the unique green sand beach, Papakōlea, park near the boat ramp and hike the dirt road in. It’s about four miles round trip in the hot sun, so bring plenty of water. The rare olivine sand found here exists at only a few places on earth, so please respect the integrity of the beach by not taking any as a souvenir. Swimming can be hazardous here, so exercise caution.

Ka Lae is a rare and unique place, a true treasure of Kaʻū. You’ll always remember your visit here! Contact us to learn more about the vacation condo rentals in Hawaii.
