On the green slopes of Hualalai, just mauka (uphill) of the Kona International Airport, is the residential community of Kalaoa. This area is hot and sunny during the day, clouds over most evenings, and has great sunset and ocean views. Kalaoa is a great choice for being close to Kailua-Kona, without being right in the middle of all the hustle and bustle of town. There’s an industrial area which includes Costco, as well as Honokohau Harbor, from which most deep-sea fishing boats launch. Another interesting spot to visit here is NELHA, the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaiʻi. It’s an ocean science and technology park that offers several different tours of the businesses housed here, which include an octopus farm, a monk seal rehabilitation center, and abalone and kampachi farms. It’s a definite must for marine biology enthusiasts!
Kalaoa is just a short drive from Kekaha Kai State Park, which includes the popular beaches of Kua Bay and Mahaiʻula. A little further north are some other fascinating shoreline areas, including Kīholo Bay, Waikoloa Beach Resort, and the beaches of the Kohala Coast. Kailua-Kona is also close to Kalaoa, so you’ll be able to enjoy visiting the area around Kailua Pier (and maybe hop on a snorkel or whale-watching cruise if so inclined!). Kailua-Kona also has plenty of restaurants, shops and movie theatres for your entertainment pleasure, as well as many fascinating historical sites such as Huliheʻe Palace and Mokuʻaikaua Church.
