Makai Sushi Hawaii

2827 Poipu Road
(808) 639-7219

Okay, so Makai Sushi is in an odd location inside a grocery store. But who cares where owner and local boy Matthew Oliver opened up shop? He’s got some of the best sushi on Kaua‘i! A graduate of the prestigious Sushi Chef Institute in Los Angeles, Chef Matt came back to his Kaua‘i home and opened a little sushi wagon called The Dragon Wagon. In 2014, he jumped on an opportunity to move his business to the popular Kukui‘ula Marketplace in Pō‘ipu, and his sushi bar, serving some of the best sushi in Kaui, has been a hit ever since.

Makai Sushi Hawaii Specialties

Makai Sushi Hawaii offers a variety of delicious and creative Koloa sushi, sashimi, and poke bowls. Using only the freshest ingredients from local farmers and fishermen, all orders of the best sushi in Kaui are prepared while guests look on, and all items are made-to-order. The Gorilla Bowl, Chef Matt’s signature dish, is a huge bowl of ‘ahi (yellowfin tuna), ono (wahoo), and salmon poke with cucumber, avocado and sweet Maui onion. His other signature dish is the ‘Ahi Poke Bowl, made from ‘ahi, cucumber, ocean salad, daikon, and tobiko. The generous bowls are served with daikon, rice, and ocean salad, and are sauced with aioli, wasabi, and sesame seeds. Makai Sushi also offers several delectable sushi rolls, and of course, traditional sushi. Oftentimes when people think of sushi bars they think “expensive,” but not Makai Sushi. Sushi rolls are $6 to $13, and poke bowls are $14 and $16.
