Kaua‘i Windsurfing

Wanna have some serious fun? Go windsurfing in Kauai! A combination of surfing and sailing, Kaua’i windsurfing, also called sailboarding, is easy and safe. Kaua‘i has some windsurfing spots that are world-class, with Kaua‘i’s unique wind conditions making for more great windsurfing spots than most of the other Hawaiian Islands. Experience smooth sailing on the glassy waters of ‘Ānini Beach, or blast across Tunnels Beach’s awesome breaks. Regardless of your skill level, you’ll find an awesome spot to windsurf Kaua‘i.

Kaua‘i Windsurfing Spots

One of the best spots for novices and seasoned windsurfers alike is ‘Ānini Beach near Hanalei Bay. This massive lagoon is fringed by Hawai‘i’s longest reef, offering shelter from the pounding North Shore waves. Wind conditions are usually good; ‘Ānini Beach is considered one of the safest and most protected beaches on Kaua‘i. For more advanced windsurfers, cruise on out to the outside break at Kalapakī Beach in front of the Marriot in Līhuʻe. The inside of Kalapakī’s natural harbor also makes a safe place for novices or beginners to hone their skills. For those who want an exhilarating ride, head out to the breathtakingly beautiful Tunnels Beach. Tunnels is famous for the backdrop of the film “Bali Hai.” After a day of stellar Kauai windsurfing, stay and watch the sunset against the towering North Shore pinnacles. One note: There’s no offroad parking at Tunnels. Park at Hā‘ena Beach Park, then walk back east ¼ mile along the beach.

Kaua‘i Windsurfing Schools and Rentals

We are hoping to someday see a business on Kaua‘i that rents sailboards; however at the moment you’ll need to bring your own gear from home. For those who are ready to learn the sport or want to refresh, Windsurf Kaua‘i is the island’s only windsurfing school. Family-owned and operated, the pro instructors at Windsurf Kaua‘i will teach you to windsurf in just one lesson. These guys specialize in first-time windsurfers; two-hour classes are held at ‘Ānini Beach Lagoon.
