Maui Surfing

Hawai‘i is the home of surfing, and Maui surfing has a number of the world’s greatest surfers. With miles of white sand beaches and tons of killer surf spots, you needn’t to go far to discover why surfing in Maui is one of the of the world’s greatest places to surf. Cruise along a gentle break on a longboard or shred on the west side tubes. Learn how to surf in Maui’s sheltered bays. Whatever your skill level, you can find the perfect swells on Maui.

Maui Surf Spots

For beginners, Rusty Pipes at Māʻalaea Beach is fairly well protected and has small waves you can build your skills on. Mākena Beach on the south side has a nice shore break and is also good for body boarding, though you want to check the daily current conditions first. Honolua Bay on the west side has some stellar tubes. Hōʻokipa Beach in Pāʻia has awesome surfing in Maui year-round, as does Freight Trains at Māʻalaea, known for the fastest right-hander in the world. For the totally insane in the pro surf community, there’s Jaws at Pe‘ahi. Jaws breaks only a few times a year, and when it does break, tow-in is by invitation only. Spectators can watch from the cliff above as pro shredders scream down the giant faces of this monster.
