Lanikai Beach

Beauty is in this beach’s name, literally. Lani Kai translates to “Heavenly Ocean.” The beach is aptly named. Turquoise waters, a wide stretch of soft, white sand, and a view of the Mokulua Islands make this beach one of our favorites on Oahu’s eastern edge.

How to Get to Lanikai Beach

Lanikai Beach is on Oahu’s eastern side in the town of Kailua. You’ll have to find space along Kailua Road or other side streets to park. You could also park at nearby Kailua Beach Park and walk. Other pedestrian access points can be found between the homes in the area. There are no restrooms or showers at Lanikai.

What to Do

Lanikai Beach Oahu is loved for swimming, snorkeling, and lounging. The water temperature around here averages 75 degrees. You’ll find a lot of families here because the beach is wide and near a public park. You may be able to catch a glimpse of kayakers who love to take advantage of the waters between the Mokulua Islands.

What to Do Nearby

Kailua is actually just 30 minutes away from Waikiki and Honolulu, but locals and visitors say it has a much more laid-back energy to it.

If you’re willing to work for a better view, particularly during sunset, do the Lanikai Pillbox Hike, also known as Ka’iwa Ridge Trail. This intermediate hike rises steeply in the beginning, but the reward is worth the effort. You’ll get views of Mokulua Islands, Kailua Beach, and the whole of Lanikai Beach Oahu. The hike takes 20 to 30 minutes.

Visit the Kailua Farmers Market for fresh fruits and vegetables and artisan foods and crafts. You’ll find the best Hawaii has to offer here in a beautiful, open-air setting: candied macadamia nuts, coffee, Thai food, BBQ, pastries and more.

You can also hike the Maunawili Falls Trail. While it gets muddy after rain, this 2.5-mile trail is worth the uphill climb in the beginning, particularly when a bit drier. The trail is 2.5 miles roundtrip and trail that leads you to Maunawili Falls. The falls pour into a deep pool fed by the Koolau mountain range.
