For beginners, the Canoes and Queens breaks at Waikīkī Beach are hands-down the best place to learn how to surf in O’ahu. Diamond Head Lighthouse has great consistent waves, but can get blown out on windy days. Also on the south shore is Tonggs, an all-around nice break with a fast right. The seven-mile stretch of O‘ahu’s famous North Shore is home to several international surf competitions. Here’s the best year-round North Shore O’ahu surf spots: Sunsets is one of O‘ahuʻs most awesome breaks and has amazing triple overheads, as does nearby Laniākea. For the most expert in the pro surf community, Pūpūkeas, the famous Banzai Pipeline, and Rocky Point are all along the same reef that makes these massive barrels possible.

Hawai‘i Surfboard Rentals, Quality Surfboards Hawai‘i, and Surf Bruddahs, all in Honolulu, all have full lines of rental surfboards and free islandwide delivery. Go Nutz Hawai‘i in Hale‘iwa is the best surf shop on the North Shore and has a huge rental inventory. Kailua Beach Adventures in Kailua has a well-stocked rental inventory and exceptionally reasonable rates.
