The Big Island of Hawai‘i is the youngest of the eight inhabited islands, and is still forming. One of the most ecologically diverse places on earth, the 14,000-foot summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa tower above the island and are home to species found no where else in the world. Wave erosion and ongoing eruptions from Kīlauea, the world’s most active volcano, have resulted in black and white sand beaches all around the island. You can experience all this and more while still enjoying all the comforts of home in one of our beautiful, fully furnished vacation rental homes in Hawaii.

Exciting Adventures on the Big Island of Hawai’i
Touring Volcanoes National Park is an activity unique to Hawaii’s Big Island. The options for exploring the park are many, including a self-guided tour or an excursion with one of the charters that venture into or above the park. Within the park’s bounds you will see surreal terrain barren except for vast expanses of lava rock, while steam vents keep the atmosphere mysterious and otherworldly. Go beyond the viewing platforms and fully immerse yourself in this unique geographic area by hiking one of the park’s trails. The geographic features can also be examined from a bird’s eye view aboard a helicopter tour. Choose one of our Big Island vacation home rentals near Volcanoes National Park for an excellent home base in exploring the area!
The breathtaking peak of Mauna Kea offers yet another amazing geographical feature to explore on the Big Island. Although there are no accommodations on the mountain, situating yourself in one of the towns near the base allows for easier access. The fact that visitors begin at sea level and then ascend to 14,000 feet within two hours make it a rare experience the world over. The peak is so high and so cold that it often even sees snow during winter months, which can be quite a shock after spending the day sweating at the beach. While it can be a challenge to make it to the summit due to road conditions and the need for 4-wheel drive, it is still worth the trek even if the journey ends at the Visitor Information Station, situated at 9,200 feet. Here you can view the sun through the solar telescope and learn more about the mountain through informational videos. If you time your visit for the evening, you will be treated an unforgettable display of stars.
On the northern coastline lies another geographic wonder – Waipio Valley. While you can certainly enjoy magnificent views from the lookout at the top, hiking down into the valley and exploring the black sand beach that lies in its depths provides an exciting venture. Those aren’t up for the descent (followed by a strenuous ascent) can choose from a variety of tour options. With the right route you can also catch views of Hi’ilawe Falls, the island’s tallest waterfall, which cascades an astounding 1300 feet down the back of the valley.
There is no shortage of exciting areas to explore on the Big Island, so browse our listings today near your most desired attractions.
