Chances are, if you stay here, you’ll want to spend a good portion of your days on the beach. There are several nice ones to choose from, just a few miles south along the Kohala Coast: Hāpuna, Kaunaʻoa (at Mauna Kea Resort), and ʻAnaehoʻomalu, to name a few. There are also many opportunities for beach rentals and whale watching boats available at the Waikoloa Beach Resort.
Things to Do Around Kohala Ranch

If you choose to spend a day adventuring to the north instead, of lingering at the beach or on the golf course, beautiful scenery and charming towns await. As you drive from the Kohala Coast to North Kohala, the scenery visibly changes from the lava landscapes to which you’ve become accustomed to the lush green pastures of the north. Along the Big Island’s northwestern coastline, you’ll find the cute, artsy towns of Hāwī and Kapaʻau; enjoy the great treasures to be hunted for in galleries there, as well as excellent locally-grown cuisine in the restaurants. Visit the original Kamehameha statue in Kapaʻau on your way to the lookout at Pololū Valley, which awaits at the end of the road. You can literally go no further than the Pololū Valley Lookout, as the next portion of the Big Island’s northern coastline is inaccessible by vehicle due to the sheer cliffs that stretch across to the Waipio Valley. The views at this lookout are well worth the drive. Small offshore islands dot the deep blue waters, and the cliffs of the Pololū Valley descend dramatically to meet at a black sand beach far below. If you want to experience the beach firsthand, it is possible to hike to the valley floor, although due to strong currents, the beach is better left for exploring and view gazing rather than swimming.
