Maui Hiking

If you are looking for some of the best tropical climate hiking in the world, look no further. Maui hikes offers some of the most diverse scenery and hiking to be found. Trek through the dense jungles and bamboo forests of Kīpahulu, descend the depths of otherworldly Haleakalā Crater, or take a leisurely coastal day hike in Maui. No matter your experience level, Maui hiking has something just for you.

Maui Hiking Trails

Maui hiking trails are very abundant, from easy half-day hikes to grueling multi-day treks.
The Kapalua Costal Trail in Kapalua is an easy 3.6-mile coastal trek stretching from Honokahua Bay to Kapalua Bay, and features four beaches plus a chance to see nesting native seabirds. Or, trek through miles of upland tropical forest at Polipoli State Park in Upcountry Maui. For the more adventurous Maui hikes, head to ʻOheʻo Gulch in Kīpahulu for a trek through jungle and bamboo forest to the 400-foot high Waikamo‘i Falls. Haleakalā and the Kaupō Gap Trail are in a class all their own.

Hiking Haleakalā and Kaupō Gap

Haleakalā and Kaupō Gap hikes start at the Haleakalā Summit trailhead at 10,000 feet in elevation; both are difficult to strenuous. Trek down Sliding Sands Trail to the first cinder cone, have lunch on the rim, and then hike back out the same way. Going back up is literally two steps forward, one step back, hence the name. Or, continue on for 11 miles to Kaupō Gap, then drop down 15.6 miles to the shore in Kaupō. Overnighting at Palikū Cabin in the Crater is recommended, and permits are required.

Maui Hiking Tours

There are many Maui hiking tour companies on Maui, but here’s our favorites: Randy Warner of Maui Hiking Safari has been hiking Maui since 1981. He has several small group treks taking you off the beaten path, and will share his in-depth knowledge of Maui’s plants, culture, and history. Epic Maui Hikes in Hāna will show you the magical world of jungles and hidden waterfalls on Maui’s lush east side. Hike Maui has some great full- and half-day Hāna waterfall and Haleakalā hikes. Most tour companies also have private Maui hikes available.
