Rainy Day Activities on Maui

Renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty and idyllic beaches, Maui is the ultimate outdoor playground. It does rain on Maui though; it wouldn’t be so beautiful here if it didn’t.

If you are staying on the windward side (north and east), which encompasses the north shore, Haʻiku, and Hāna, it rains often. Lāhaina and Kiheī are on the leeward side (south and west) and see little rain, as does Upcountry Maui, though there are certainly days of soggy weather. No matter where you are on Maui, the weather can change at moment’s notice, but don’t worry. There are many fun and fascinating things to do in Maui when it rains.

Things To Do in Maui When it Rains

Leeward Side

When the weather is wet outside, it’s time to pay a visit to the amazing watery world of the Maui Ocean Center, one of our favorite rainy day activities. This multi-million-dollar aquarium complex features the world’s largest collection of live Pacific corals, a walk-through glass tunnel through the middle of a 750,000-gallon aquarium, and over 60 fascinating marine exhibits. At The Grand Wailea Resort, you can indulge yourself in a full day of pampering at their luxurious spa, or take in the wealth of art galleries along Front Street in Lāhaina.

Windward Side

It does rain frequently on the windward side, especially in Hāna. If you are on the north shore and wondering what to do in Maui when it rains check out the funky, eclectic town of Pāʻia. This quaint former plantation town is loaded with art galleries, unusual shops, and several good restaurants. A little further down the coast is Mama’s Fish House, where you can enjoy a stellar lunch or dinner in unparalleled tropical ambiance next to the ocean; you have to try their liliko‘i crème bruleé! In Hāna, be sure to visit the Hāna Coast Gallery, the Hāna Ranch Resturant, and historic Hasegawa Store.

Upcountry

Not only does Upcountry offer awe-inspiring panoramic views, it also has a lot of things to do in Maui when it rains. Eat and shop your way through the historic ranching town of Makawao, or head south on Haleakalā Highway to Ulupalakua, where you will find Tedeschi Vineyard. Located on historic ʻUlupalakua Ranch, Tedeschi Vineyard offers a museum, winery tours, wine tasting, and a unique gift shop.

Singing in the Rain
